Pitch accuracy: are you hitting the note?
Pitch accuracy is the clearest signal of singing improvement, because it has an objective target: the note either matches or it doesn’t. You can measure it with a pitch-detection tool that listens through your microphone and shows how close each sung note is to the target (a pitch test does this). Sing a set of notes, and your accuracy is how precisely you match them.
The key to measuring it honestly is to track the same exercises under similar conditions over weeks, not to compare one good day to one bad day. In our data we report pitch accuracy as the percentage of target notes a singer matches, measured in their first week and again after several weeks of practice.
Vocal range: how many notes can you sing?
Vocal range is the distance from your lowest to your highest comfortably-sung note, usually measured in semitones (half-steps). A vocal range test walks you down to your floor and up to your ceiling and reports the span. Expanding range is a real marker of progress, especially for beginners.
But range is noisy, and you should treat single measurements with caution. Your range on any given day depends on warm-up, vocal fatigue, time of day, hydration, even microphone sensitivity. A 2-3 semitone swing between measurements can be conditions, not change. The fix is the same as for pitch: measure repeatedly and look at the trend, not one reading.
Consistency, and the signals that are easy to fool yourself with
Beyond accuracy and range, consistency matters – hitting notes reliably, not just occasionally. What you should be wary of are subjective impressions (“I sounded great today”) and one-off recordings, which are heavily influenced by mood, the song, and the room. Objective, repeated measurement is what separates real improvement from a good day.
The most important rule: measure the same person over time
This is where most “our users improved” claims go wrong, and it’s worth understanding whether you’re tracking yourself or reading someone’s data. If you average a big group at the start and a smaller group later, the later group looks better – but partly because the people who struggled most dropped out. That’s survivor bias, and it inflates results.
The honest method is a paired comparison: measure the same individuals at the start and again later, and report how those specific people changed. It’s a smaller, less flashy number, but it’s the trustworthy one. Every improvement figure we publish is a paired comparison of the same singers measured twice, with the number of people stated.
What measurement can’t tell you (state it openly)
Whether you’re tracking your own progress or evaluating a study, these limits always apply:
- Correlation isn’t causation. Improving while using a tool doesn’t prove the tool caused it – more practice alone would also help. Without a control group doing equal practice without the tool, you can’t fully separate the two.
- Self-selection. People who keep practicing (or who choose a particular method) are usually more motivated to begin with, which flatters the results.
- Regression to the mean. Very low first scores tend to rise on their own, so some of a beginner’s big early gain is statistical, not skill.
- Measurement noise. Range especially, but any single reading, is affected by conditions. Trends over many readings are reliable; single numbers aren’t.
Stating these isn’t a weakness – it’s what makes a number worth trusting. A measured, qualified result beats an impressive one you can’t stand behind.
